The Future of Agents & Apps with Satya Nadella

Earlier this year, I talked with Satya Nadella at TieCon 2025 about why agents represent the future and how apps will evolve in this era of AI. In this new world, agents will come to apps, work across systems, and anticipate intent. This simple shift may upend everything we’ve come to accept about enterprise apps: how they’re built, used, and monetized.

A few insights continue to shape how I think about what’s next:

  • First, enterprise software is no longer just a destination—it’s becoming a service layer. Instead of users going to apps, agents will come to users, gathering context and taking action across systems.
  • Second, this means we need to rethink what product usage even looks like. In a world where agents drive outcomes, traditional metrics like MAUs or logins won’t tell the full story.
  • Third, I’ve started thinking of these systems as ambient agents or what I like to call AI Teammates that work alongside us, invisibly and intelligently, helping us do more with less friction.

For founders building the future, the question isn’t “How do I bolt on AI?” It’s “How do I design for a world where intelligence is the interface?”
