We recently hosted a webinar featuring Kim Scott, author of Radical Respect and Radical Candor, as part of Mayfield’s ongoing commitment to helping our founders build enduring companies and cultures.
The conversation highlighted how intentional leadership, rooted in care, candor, and respect, can shape cultures that empower people to do their best work and scale companies with integrity.
Recognize and Respond to Harmful Behavior
Scott emphasized the importance of distinguishing between bias, prejudice, and bullying, because each requires a different response. Bias is often unconscious and invites curiosity and conversation. Prejudice is a consciously held belief that must be challenged clearly and directly to reinforce company values. Bullying is a behavior that causes harm regardless of intent and must be confronted quickly and structurally to protect trust and team well-being.
Build Respect Into Everyday Systems
Respect doesn’t happen by accident. Founders can define what respectful behavior looks like, encourage “calling in” rather than “calling out” to promote accountability without shame, and embed respect into hiring, feedback, and performance processes. Leaders set the tone by modeling humility, curiosity, and the willingness to admit mistakes.
Culture as a Competitive Advantage
Teams grounded in respect collaborate more effectively, move faster, and innovate with greater trust, demonstrating that how we lead is as important as what we build. A culture of Radical Respect reduces friction, improves retention, and accelerates execution.
