Elemental Security Inc., a provider of enterprise security and compliance management technology, has named Richard Hornstein as its chief financial officer and general counsel.

Hornstein started last month, replacing Mike Dicky, a consultant CFO. This is Elemental Security's first permanent CFO.

Hornstein, who is both an accountant and a lawyer, most recently served as CFO of OpenTV Inc., a publicly traded interactive television software company. Before that, he served as CFO and general counsel for Resonate Inc., a publicly traded network traffic control and system management company. Hornstein also served as general counsel, senior VP of corporate development and senior VP of taxation for McAfee Associates Inc., now McAfee Inc.

The company's Elemental Security Platform delivers policy management, host configuration and network access control to enterprise and government organizations.

The system allows a company to express policies, as well as monitor and measure compliance, and enforce policies if necessary. These policies are internal and deal with both security and compliance issues such as Sarbanes-Oxley.

Since the company's June financing round, the company has secured 15 new customers, including Catholic Health System, Temple University and Marshall BankFirst Corp.

Founded in December 2002, Elemental is based in San Mateo, Calif. Last year, the company closed its Series C financing of about $11 million from Lehman Brothers Venture Partners, Bessemer Venture Partners, Mayfield Fund and Sequoia Capital.
