Mayfield Fund Entrepreneurs Do the Math: 2+2=5

Mayfield Fund is investing in five global drivers, namely – big data, cloud/SaaS, energy, mobile, and social – which are transforming the lives of consumers and business users.
Many of our entrepreneurs are leveraging more than one of these drivers to build companies where the whole is often greater than the sum of the parts. Some examples include:
- Jeff Haynie and Nolan Wright of Appcelerator just added cloud services to their industry-leading mobile platform through the acquisition of Cocoafish. Appcelerator is now the only company that has both a front-end mobile application development environment as well as back-end cloud integration services.
- Bob Wiederhold, James Phillips, and Damien Katz of Couchbase have established Couchbase as the NoSQL platform for Big Data. Increasingly, users are tapping the mobile version of the database to connect their apps to the cloud.
- Ron Gutman has built Healthtap into the premier health network by leveraging social Q&A and game dynamics to engage doctors. Many patients are asking questions from their mobile devices, enabling Healthtap to tap into both social and mobile as drivers.
- Athani Krishnaprasad, Hari Subramanian, and Dave Yarnold of ServiceMax offer an innovative mobile enterprise app that empowers field service professionals. The real magic happens when Servicemax users access GPS data and cloud services to re-route technicians or troubleshoot by collaborating real time with experts at the home office.
- Patrick Salyer, Rooly Eliezerov, Eyal Magen, and Eran Kutner of Gigya are leveraging three of these trends: Gigya is a SaaS-based platform that equips sites and apps with a complete social infrastructure to bolster user engagement and personalize marketing efforts. Users can interact with Gigya-powered sites and apps from their mobile devices, allowing enterprises to store and analyze rich social profile data in a Gigya-hosted cloud database.
We are looking forward to partnering with many more entrepreneurs as they “Do the Math”, where the power of leverage results in 2+2=5.
